The Minnesota Timberwolves have been a disappointment to NBA fans this season. At the beginning of the season they were considered a team that could make the playoffs in the West and pull out a couple postseason wins. That will not happen for them this season and likely not within the next two years. Even with one of the most talented big men in the league in Karl-Anthony Towns, they struggle to pull together defensive stops and a building distrust with starting point guard Rick Rubio, the team appears to be lost. Tom Thibodeau known for his defensive mind during his time with the Bulls, is obviously frustrated with his teams seemingly lack of effort on the defensive end. His frustration has led to the trade rumors swirling around the team, mostly involving former point guard of the future Ricky Rubio.
The possible moving on from Ricky Rubio may be what the young Timberwolves team needs, it can show the young roster that anyone is expendable if they do not preform. Rubio who has struggled this season, has not proven to be a point guard the team can be a playoff team with, consistently failing to make open shots from the field. Trading a still young player such as Rubio allows the Timberwolves to receive another young player in return. A possibly trade target for them could be Nerlens Noel, a player the 76ers have been looking to trade since the start of last season and can further the team’s young forward presence. The trade also allows Kris Dunn, a player who is looking like a steal from this year’s draft even at number five overall, to have more time in with the starters and begin to develop the chemistry needed for future success.
The Timberwolves are a team filled with some of the top young talent in the NBA and they have the potential to be a top-level team in the West with time, but for now their lack of defensive efficiency has held them back. With the core of the roster still being in their early twenties, the team’s ceiling is high and with a possible move allowing for more minutes to rookie point guard Kris Dun, the Timberwolves may be a dominant team in the West as time goes on.
